Understand CFRE : Step by Step to Achieve your Goal

Founded in 2001, CFRE International is an independent nonprofit organization whose sole mission is dedicated to setting standards in philanthropy through a valid and reliable certification process for fundraising professionals. In this topic we are going in depth to understand CFRE and a step by step guide to achieve your goal to become one.

Lets eavesdrop to a conversation between Ben and Linda to know more.

Ben: What is the CFRE designation and why is it important in the field of fundraising?

Linda: The CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive is a voluntary credential that is recognized worldwide. The CFRE signifies a confident, ethical fundraising professional. It is how today’s fundraiser shows accountability, service, and commitment to making a difference for good. I believe the CFRE credential is vital to a fundraiser’s professional growth and that it sets the standard for ethical practice in the sector.

Ben: How many CFREs are there?

Linda: There are more than 7,600 fundraising professionals from over 25 countries who are currently CFREs.

Ben: Why do employers prefer to hire CFREs?

Linda: When I received my CFRE, most employers did not recognize the benefits of hiring CFREs, in fact, most did not even know what the designation was. Today, 54% of CFREs receive employer support towards their initial certification fees and 60% of employers put money towards the continuing education required for certification. These employers know that by investing in their staff, they are investing in their fundraising department’s future success. Research shows that accredited certification programs are consistently preferred by employers because they drive quality and improve results.

Ben: What is the process like?

Linda: To earn CFRE certification, fundraising professionals must meet education, professional practice, and professional performance requirements; pass a comprehensive exam on best practices in ethical fundraising; and attest that they are knowledgeable and abide by the International Statement of Ethical Principles in Fundraising as well as laws governing fundraising in their region of practice.

Ben: What do current CFREs say about the CFRE designation?

Linda: Over 90 percent of current CFREs said they would recommend becoming a CFRE to a colleague, citing increased opportunities for career advantages and advancement.

Ben: Can the CFRE help you land a better job?

Linda: CFRE certification can give you the “edge” when being considered for a promotion or other career opportunities. That’s why 89 percent of CFREs say the certification has enhanced their professional opportunities.Holding a professional certification gives you exceptional leverage when negotiating your next package. In fact, 83% of CFREs say earning their CFRE has had value in increasing their salary

Ben: How did the CFRE process help you in your career?

Linda: Like many other, I felt that the CFRE was a personal and professional achievement I wanted to attain. Holding a CFRE shows that you have displayed mastery of the field by meeting requirements and standards set in philanthropy. Nearly 99% of CFREs say earning their CFRE gave them a sense of personal achievement.

Ben: Did people value your consulting services more because you held the CFRE?

Linda: Yes, when I originally received my CFRE, and then later when I attained the ACFRE designation, I felt I had an edge over my competition. And I am not alone. More than 93% of CFREs say they have gained increased recognition from peers by earning their certification.

Ben: How will this CFRE course help you attain the CFRE?

Linda: This course covers all the basics covered in the CFRE exam and more. You’ll learn about various methods of fundraising; the role of board, staff, and volunteers in fundraising; strategic and development planning; ethics in fundraising; and more.

Ben: Does this course provide CEU credit which will count toward the education I need to apply for the CFRE?

Linda: Yes, the course is approved for 16 CFRE points.

The Value of Business Certifications, Get Certified, and Get Ahead with Guruface!

To gain a clearer understanding of the ‘value’ of accredited certification, the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) carried out a survey of businesses in 40 different economies. Over 4,000 responses were received from businesses of all sizes operating across a diverse range of industries – worldwide. Over a quarter of respondents were either finance directors, marketing managers or other senior management personnel indicates that the value of certification is recognized across the spectrum of business functions.  Certifications are not just for IT and are equally.  Business certifications are also highly prized and valued.

Businesses value people with certifications and the only question is the certification bodies they rely on to deliver well trained employees. Using an accredited certification body assures the organizations that the organization will get the business benefits and value it pays for in that salary to the certified person.  The is the real value in certification.

In the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) survey over 80% of all respondents reported that certification had added value to their organization. As a more quantifiable measure, around half of all participants have seen an increase in sales as a direct result of the certification.   Simply put they are getting a more efficient and productive employee.

And it’s that internal business improvement was given by nearly half of all survey participants as the main driver for seeking certification, while approximately one-third said it was a requirement of their customers and over 80% confirmed that certification had helped them meet national regulatory requirements. Businesses that Contract and Sub-Contract to Government must demonstrate their employees are highly skilled in their role.

Taken together, these figures indicate that certification is something organizations are choosing to improve internal operations and to provide B2C customer and B2B client confidence.   Also, it’s not just the larger companies that are realizing these benefits though, as nearly two-thirds of respondents of the survey work in small businesses, half of which have less than 50 employees.

For the individual, certifications are door openers to any role you want to get into or any job you want to apply for.   Get a recognized certification in that field and job recruiters will pay closer attention to your resume than those without the certification.

Project Management PMP Certification : Getting Your Employer To Pay

Having a Project Management PMP certification shows that you meet a foundational framework of knowledge but how do you get your employer to pay for your certification?  Here’s a few tips on how to convince your employer to pay for your Project Management certification.

Your New Skill & Knowledge Can Save Your Employer Money

You have to paint a picture of how the certification will help you be an even better employee, whether it’s a class that will hone a particular skill that you use on the job, or provide you with a greater understanding of the inner workings of the industry.    The simplest and most powerful way to do this is to show them their expected return on investment.  Explain to them how you will be able to add more value thanks to your training, say for example, “With my PMP certification, I will be able to create more stability and reduce risks in our projects – and both of these are key goals of our organization.”

Support your justification of why your employer should pay for your Project Management PMP Certification by speaking to how you being certified will help your employer avoid becoming one of these four 2015 statistics

  1. One in six IT projects have an average cost overrun of 200% and a schedule overrun of 70%. (Source: Harvard Business Review)
  1. 75% of business and IT executives anticipate their software projects will fail. (Source: Geneca)
  1. Fewer than a third of all projects were successfully completed on time and on budget over the past year. (Source: Standish Group)
  1. An astounding 97% of organizations believe project management is critical to business performance and organizational success. (Source:PricewaterhouseCoopers)

Also be sure to let your employer know that having employees with specific and pertinent certifications can help distinguish the company from less-certified bidders and bring in new accounts.  Whether one believes in the intrinsic value of PMP certification or not, the economic reality is many major companies and entities are simply demanding it.   If your company has bid on a government project over the past several years – be it federal, state or local, or even with a Fortune 1000 company, they have likely encountered the PMP certification requirement.  So for example if your business sub-contracts to Government or a larger company, it’s of value to those that you are certified in Project Management.

Further remind your employer certification programs are a great way for them to ensure that their employees’ skills don’t become dated and go stale.   For example Project Managers (PMP) certification requires continued learning and earning a specific amount of PDUs per three-year certification cycle.  By recertifying employers are assured that the skills of their employees remain fresh.

Research the Time and Cost

It’s very important to assure your employer that when they pay for your PMP Certification training and you are in the course it will not take any time away from your current work.   For this point, do some research into the cost and time taken for this certification? Answer questions such as:

  • How much will the exam(s) cost?
  • Are there any PMP training courses involved? How much will they cost? (contact us here at Guruface and learn the price for live online instructor led compared to prerecorded courses).
  • Do I need any books to study from?
  • Do I need to take any time off?
  • How long will it take me to complete? This can show the company when they can get the benefits of it.

We of course can help you with many of these points however once you know this information, you should be able to prepare a final dollar amount for the certification.   That makes the decision making process clear and complete, you have a better chance to get the approvals required with a clear view of the cost to your employer. Be mindful here at Guruface we offer two e-learning options, live instructor led training and prerecoded courses where the course costs are slightly lower.     Regardless of your schedule, we know you are busy and have learning options that can adjust to your schedule.

Program Management Act of 2015 HR 2144 = PMP Certification Smart!

Program Management Improvement and Accountability Act of 2015” (HR 2144) makes Project Management Certification, PMP and CAPM, a smart move!

In 2015 legislation was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that will make significant improvements to program and project management policy in the U.S. government. Presented by Congressmen Todd Young (R-IN) and Gerry Connolly (D-VA), the “Program Management Improvement and Accountability Act of 2015” (HR 2144) is a key initiative that will enable the Government Efficiency Caucus of the U.S. Congress to implement leading practices in project and program management across the U.S. government.

Among those reforms included in the legislation are:

  1. Creation of a formal job series and career path for program managers in the federal government.
  2. Development of a standards-based model for program management consistent throughout the federal government.
  3. Recognition of the essential role of executive sponsorship and engagement by designating a senior executive in each agency to be responsible for program management policy and strategy.
  4. Alignment of cross-government approaches to program management through an interagency council on program management.

Many of these reforms are influenced by Project Management Institute (PMI’s) research, which shows that organizations that invest in formal approaches to program management improve outcomes, accountability and efficiency. By adopting program management standards organizations increase collaboration, improve decision making and reduce risk. Research also shows that utilizing proven best practices and standards reduces wasteful spending and increases the efficiency of managing a program. In addition, organizations can expect to see significant improvement in their project completion rates and do so within budget.
There will be challenges to migrating federal agencies to adopt a program and project management offices practices, but Guruface is here and will be offering live online and prerecorded courses in Project Management leading to PMP and CAPM certification.

Project management makes sense for government agencies because it not only reduces capital expenditures, but also provides transparent assessment and real-time access to the state of a program or project.  Additionally, with the diminished budgets that so many agencies are experiencing, reducing total cost of ownership and focusing investments on the execution of core strategic issues are a bigger priority today than ever before.

It’s worth noting being a Project Manager in Government ( the public sector) can be very different than in the private sector. This holds true if the project manager is working directly for the government or as a private contractor performing work for a government agency.  The public sector has a much different culture than the private sector, and this can create special issues for the project manager and barriers for the project.

All organizations experience change in leadership and management, but in government there is a built-in process to enable regular change, namely elections. Many agency heads are elected or appointed by elected officials, and this happens every two or four years. When the leaders of an organization change, they often make more changes that ripple through the organization. This could include turnover within the upper and middle management level–and even a shift in the primary mission of the agency. Just something to be aware of in exploring the new opportunities ahead with the new  “Program Management Improvement and Accountability Act of 2015” (HR 2144) initiative to adopt Project Management Practices Government-wide.   The U.S. demand for Project Managers is expanding by more than 12 percent, resulting in almost 6.2 million jobs predicted in 2020, according to PMI’s 2013 Talent Gap Report.  Expect much of that growth to be in Government and with Government subcontractors.  Guruface is here to offer busy professionals multiples paths to get trained and certified in Project Management.

The Value of Project Management Professional Certification

Have you been thinking about getting a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification?   Most people are surprised to learn of the real value a PMP and that’s perhaps best brought into clear understanding when compared to the MBA (Masters Business Administration).

In 2015 the average total cost of North American programs (MBA)  is about $222,000(1). The national average salary for MBA working as marketing directors and chief financial officers was $118,654 and $128,201, respectively(2). Hence with an MBA degree, you can expect to about  half per year of what that MBA degree cost you.

Contrasted this with the PMP Certification where the median Project Practitioner salary in the U.S. is $108,000(3). The cost of PMP Certification course here at GuruFace is less than $1,000 hence you can expect to earn 100X more per year than what the PMP cost you.

And though most MBA degree programs are 2 years,  there are accelerated MBA degree Programs that enable you to earn and MBA degree in as short as 12 months. Nonetheless this is still an a great deal of time for a busy professional.  A typical PMP program leading to certification at GuruFace will take about 2 months time.

Viewing it from a very general ROI (return on investment) perspective, the amount of money and time needed to invest in an MBA compared with what is needed in money and time for a PMP, the difference on your return on investment can be dramatic.

The MBA degree and the PMP certification are different and thus have different goals and requirements.  The PMP certification reflects the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), and project management skills. Though the PMP is a certificate and not a degree – you can’t go get a PMP certificate by directly taking a test — there are time-in-service requirements as well as education requirements specific to the PMBOK before you can take the certifying exam depending upon your education and experience in the field.  If you have approximately two years of education, 7,500 hours of project management experience and 35 hours of education in project management which you can get here at GuruFace, you may take the exam. Alternatively, you can take the exam if you have a four-year degree, 4,500 hours of experience and 35 hours of education in project management, again which you can obtain here at GuruFace.

Certifications like the Project Management Professional (PMP), have become popular because they demonstrate to employers you’re ready to manage their services and other projects in the areas of  schedules, costs, performance, quality, risks and procurement with a focus on profitability. Project managers start with a detailed plan, thinking through every aspect of the job. The then implement the plan while controlling the overall effort to get desired results, all while adjusting and navigating through the inevitably roadblocks and snags that come with projects.

Who recognizes the PMP certification?  Major companies and government agencies worldwide recognize the PMP certification. Several Fortune 1000 companies demand that all of their employees or subcontractors that are engaged in project management activities should be PMPs. In other words, the PMP certification has become a market differentiator.

Online learning can help businesses remain at the cutting edge

Moses Tse for South China Morning Post writes:   Most companies acknowledge the value of continuing education for their employees. It is a straightforward way to ensure staff are up to date on the latest and best ideas, as well as changes in regulations and requirements in a specific industry.

Managers should also recognize that digital technologies can optimize the delivery of continuing education. We advocate providing a mixture of “live” interactive courses that can be attended in a boardroom, via skype or by dialling in with video courses that can be simultaneously deployed to PCs, tablets, and smartphones – enabling learners the flexibility to study at their convenience. By using a blend of classroom-based training and a digital learning environment you can link your staff to experts from inside and outside the business.

We’ve made learning continuous, flexible and increasingly democratised

For live courses, use online sign-ups and offer participants proactive notifications via email and SMS to alert them if their planned/interested courses have last-minute seats available. In addition, promote online discussions to extend the learning process before and after formal training.  (SNIP, click here to read the rest of the article).

GuruFace Comment: GuruFace offers all the tools companies need to conduction training online, regardless of where their employees are around the world.  Online training allows employees to learn at their own pace and at a time that’s convenient for them.  And, no matter which shift an employee works, training is always available anywhere there is an Internet connection, which makes these programs effective for training across multiple locations.  Because all the trainees will use the same program, training materials are standardized. 3 Online Education Trends That Will Shape How Employers Hire In 2016 – Get Certified at GuruFace

Rick Levin, CEO, Coursera for Forbes writes: Four years after the first massive open online courses appeared, online learning is becoming part of the fabric of both student and professional life. 2016 will be a crucial year in the development of this powerful new tool. The first organizations to recognize these emerging three Online education trends that will move several steps ahead in the race to build great, transformative companies.

Job Seekers Will Build Portfolios of Online Certificates, the New Currency for Skills

Online course certificates will become a prerequisite on resumes whether or not they are recognized by an official accrediting institution. That’s because job seekers and talent managers increasingly recognize the value of these certificates as an alternative way to gain and demonstrate marketable skills.

Online certificates aren’t just for the exceptionally ambitious or resourceful job seekers. Coursera certificates are already one of the most popular certificates shared on LinkedIn profiles. Google and other companies are starting to list online courses as recommended qualifications for technical roles, and the Department of Education is piloting a program to provide federal financial aid for online courses. As acceptance grows, online learning will prove essential to closing the skills gap, especially in relatively new, fast-growing fields like data science, software development, digital marketing, and cyber security.

GuruFace Comment: Professional certifications, like those you can obtain here at GuruFace, allow students to add specific skills and specializations to their resume for a fraction of the time and tuition required for grad school. Certifications, as you progress in your career, are all about making you more employable. This is especially true in fields such as IT, information technology. Certificates and industry certifications also show employers that you are continuously improving your skills.

Learning Will Become the Most Coveted Perk at Hot Employers

HR leaders are paying attention to online education not only on the resumes of job-seekers but also as a means of training their own employees. Millennials are expected to change jobs 13 times over the course of their careers. In this kind of job market, ping pong tables and catered meals can only keep an employee happy for so long. More than anything else, the next generation of employees is looking for the opportunity to continually grow throughout their careers.

The urgency of employee training needs is calling forth a variety of creative approaches to learning from the ed tech sector. Emerging platforms offer high-touch experiences (HackReactor and General Assembly), hands-on portals (Codecademy), industry expert teaching (Udacity), and state-of-the-art knowledge from the world’s leading universities (Coursera and edX). Not only are these new education solutions more suitable for today’s workers, their method of delivery is much more scalable and cost effective than previous approaches to corporate training.

GuruFace Comment:  In some ways, online learning may actually be more rigorous than the traditional classroom learning.  A student needs to be active and engaged, disciplined and self-motivated to meet deadlines. There’s no hiding in the back of the classroom without ever raising a hand. Online classes typically require participation, and it’s easier to track who is and isn’t weighing in when it’s all recorded as data.  In this way, online education is not only mirroring what’s happening in the workplace but also preparing students for the emerging work environment.  Employers understand this and this is another way GuruFace helps prepare students to be competitive in the new workplace.

The World Will Become Your Hiring Pool

One of the most inspiring and challenging aspects of building an education technology company is that the product is immediately international. Three-quarters of Coursera’s users are outside of the US and half are from emerging economies. Global companies are taking notice.

When an internet connection is all you need to access great learning experiences, the barrier to entry is very low. Anyone around the world who can demonstrate mastery of the content and rise to the top of their peer group is a high-potential candidate. This global reach creates exciting new recruitment opportunities.

One example is Askhat Murzabayev, a computer science student in his early 20’s from Kazakhstan. His local university did not offer advanced courses in artificial intelligence, and so he enrolled in Stanford’s online Machine Learning course. Askhat put the certificate he earned on his resume and immediately heard from many interested employers. He accepted an offer from Twitter in the company’s Kazakhstan offices.

GuruFace Comment: Online courses like what’s offered here at GuruFace also create multiple avenues for connecting and collaborating online with instructors who are experts in their fields as well as classmates, who are typically other working professionals. So in addition to acquiring marketable skills and worthwhile credentials, GuruFace students have a ready-made global network of future contacts as they move onward and upward in their chosen careers.

“I am enthusiastic about what the openSAP platform has provided to over 300,000 unique learners from more than 180 countries,” said Professor Hasso Plattner, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SAP SE. “We attribute the success of the platform to the fact that the courses are crafted specifically with the user in mind. Whether you are an SAP software user, employee, or just interested in digital technology, these courses are highly impactful.”

The Pros and Cons of Getting Online Accounting Education – SAP FICO Certification with Guruface

Arlene B Morgan for AccountingWeb writes: Accountants are mandatory for every firm whether private or government based as they are the people dealing with financial data of those companies and through them all the monetary reports are done and prepared. As those courses of Accounting are valuable enough, people are choosing them more and more. But, lack of institutions sometimes create major problems and besides, pupils have to perform so many deeds at the similar time and hence, they don’t get enough time for studying.

Online courses in Accounting:
Keeping all these above-told problems of the students in mind, lots of colleges and universities are giving them opportunities to make the finish of their academic degrees via online mode. If you are also thinking of possessing a degree in Accountancy, move forward for availing the online options but before this, just check out the advantages along with the disadvantages of those online courses.

GuruFace Comment: Here at GuruFace in the accounting space, we offer online instructor-led SAP FICO courses leading to certification.   With SAP FICO –  FI stands for Financial Accounting and CO for Controlling, used to review and monitor the financial situation of an organization. By using SAP FICO certification, you can examine the inside operations by generating and scheduling the reports and can discover the solutions for accounting requirements. SAP FI represents the aspects of financials and SAP CO aspects the Managerial and Cost Controlling.

Beneficial facts:

Technology:  The technology used to teach those students are advanced and hence, in spite of learning through this distance mode, students can interact with other pupils of their stream and a wondrous communication system is always available as they can get in touch with their needed people whenever they feel requirement of them, which is indeed not possible in the regular courses.

Flexibility:  Flexibility is the major issue that has been offered by these courses as here; a student is always independent to study whenever he or she gets time for it. There is no proper schedule imposed on them and hence, they can learn while fulfilling all the other responsibilities and deeds.

Self-Discipline:  No instructor is provided personally to the students and they have to prepare on their own for the examinations and thus, these pupils learn to be disciplined enough. If you are going to take that opportunity, it’s guaranteed that you would also be able to change yourself while going through this course.

Cost:  The cost of the online courses in this regard is not so high and in addition to that, several expenses are also not in requisite which in thecase is the real satisfaction for students. On the other, some institutions offer courses free of cost which is nevertheless unique and helpful for pupils.

Guruface Comment: This is all accurate and true of the education and training experience you can have at Guruface. In addition, it should be mentioned the technology and flexibility also extend to learning on your computer, tablet, or phone.

Now let’s move on to the disadvantageous issues regarding online Accounting Education.

Some cons:

Among some minor flaws these online courses show some of the following aspects such as:

Get indiscipline:  As there is not much pressure as naturally, students are found to escape their duties regarding education. Besides, as they don’t have to attend the organizations directly; that may affect their concentration as well as discipline level too.
